What if Robert Kennedy's delegates refuse to give up after his death, and start a draft Teddy movement at the Democratic Convention? After several ballots, McCarthy drops out and endorses Kennedy. As part of the deal, McCarthy gets to choose the VP, and he selects Senator George McGovern of South Dakota.

At the Republican Convention, Nelson Rockefeller is able to upset Richard Nixon and wins the nomination. Rocky selects Hawaii Senator Hiram Fong as his running mate.

George Wallace still runs with Curtis LeMay.

How would this elections play out? Kennedy/McGovern v. Rockefeller/Fong v. Wallace/Lemay

It's highly unlikely that McCarthy would have ever endorsed anyone named Kennedy, but...

The DNC proposal is unlikely at best. McCarthy and the Kennedy-clan basically hated each others guts.

In the general I would imagine the election going to the house.

Maine only went for Humphrey due to Muskie. If Muskie wasn't on the ticket Maine goes GOP.

Perhaps, but Maine wasn't quite as Republican as Vermont and New Hampshire were at that time. Carter came very close to winning it in 1976 (and even 1980) despite having no home state bonus.

I now the DNC scenario isn't very likely, but please look over that part. Wink I'd just really like to see what you guys think about the general election. Wink

Well McCarthy's contempt for the Kennedys was quite unrelenting, so it is certainly a stretch. McCarthy and McGovern weren't on the best of terms either after the latter jumped into the race, though I'm not sure if that occurred in your timeline.

Wallace seems to really overperform in some of these maps.

Rockefeller could probably hold on to TN/KY by tenuous margins, maybe even Texas.

I can't imagine 3 worse candidates running in the same year. My vote is for Wallace because I wouldn't be able to stand those types of Republicans. Ted Kennedy was not electable in any election year ever. I hesitated to give him Hawaii and West Virginia, but I think he'd break through.

You realize Wallace wanted to double the Great Society, right?

Double the great society, but support segregation? That's not an oxymoron. Maybe I'd stay home or write in Ralph Nader.
