I apparently haven't, since people keep saying Holland.

And I'll keep saying it. It's widely used and even the Dutch themselves say it. It may not be "correct"....but is it that important to you?

It's a pet peeve that people say the name of a province (or two provinces) rather than the name of the whole country. And, yes, it pisses me off.

I live in a tourist area where many tourists are either from Germany or Holland. And I´ve talked with many of them and about 90% of them answer "Holland" when I ask them where they are from (As if it where necessary to ask them, because most times you already know that they are from Holland because of their Holland dialect).

...and? They're still wrong. Holland is flipping region, not a country.

They polled 400 people, of which 18% are FPÖ folks and 11% Green folks.

That would produce a 20% margin of error ... Tongue

Well, talking to a German, that would probably be the more natural word to use, right?  The Germans use the term Holländer for them, no?  I remember hearing that was because "Dutch" sounds too much like "Deutsch"

Yeah, nobody says "Dutch" when a "Holländer" is meant. It´s either a Holländer or a Niederländer. While almost everyone speaking will say Holländer, Niederländer is the preferred written way (even though the Bild used Holland instead of Netherlands in their rankings of the WC). Don´t even know what the offical writing style is in the Beamtentum. For example if a German border cop finds drugs in a Dutch car and writes a report, which term is he allowed to use ? "Der holländische Tatverdächtige" or "Der niederländische Tatverdächtige" and so on ...

Holland is definitely correct at least when you're referring to their soccer team (see here and here), and considering that I know Dutch people who call their own country Holland as well, Hashemite needs to be stop complaining.

It remains officially incorrect at any rate, and I'm quite allowed to have that as my pet peeve.

Lol, what's behind that? Small sample size, or are the FPÖ voters just that dumb and the Green voters just that football-unsavvy? Tongue

Yeah, nobody says "Dutch" when a "Holländer" is meant.
Except brainshat anglophones, of course.

Speaking of anglophones... in the first ever recorded instance of the word (or second now maybe?) they're what's meant by it. Cheesy

The scores are in, and we have a final ranking for all 19 people who tipped at any stage. I am now just tabulating the points-per-game ratio for tiebreaking purposes Shocked

Also commiserations to Franzl for missing out on third by a single point, and I think I deserve the award for most winner points, with 25, followed by Lewis with 5 and Antonio V with 3, if that is an award Smiley
