No, of course not. It's too bad the British sold out so easily to terrorists.

Yes, of course. Every people deserves its own State, all the more when you consider what happened to this people in particular.

Netanyahu and the bunch of idiots who govern with him have absolutely nothing to do with the original zionist movement, which was perfectly fairn and legitimate.

The Irgun was a fringe extremist movement which had nothing to do with mainstream zionism. But you probably already knew that, and were just trying to make a fallacious point.

No, at least not as it is now. At the very least it shouldn't have been around Jerusalem.

The best answer of course is:it depends. Knowing what we know now, in particular the way the Israeli's misbehaved for 60 years, the answer can only be no. It has created huge political unrest in the Middle East and I'm pretty sure there would have been no 9/11 if Israel had not existed. That said in 1948 it seemed reasonble to grant the Jews their own state.

If they had compensated the displaced then I would be less inclined to say "no".

In 1948 I probably would have.. in the spirit of remaking the globe however we liked, which was the norm then.  Who'd have known they'd end up being the new nazis?

I'd have probably made them move to Madagascar or Surinam though.

How many times has this question been asked here now? It's a pity that questions about the Middle East always had back to reductionism and presentist interpretations of the past.

I am opposed to the planning of "ethnic states" on principle, so no.

Yes. The Jewish people deserved their own state then and now.

I would have supported the idea, but not the location.

It wasn't the worst decision ever made by a long shot, and made sense then.  It's regrettable, though.  I'm opposed to the whole nation-state concept and the fundamental idea of a Jewish (or Palestinian, for that matter) Homeland, but I realize that that wasn't a popular position during decolonization.

Germany would be the most fair location. I wouldn't oppose that.

Except there was NO historical claim to Germany.  In Israel, there was a tangible claim.

There was about as much of a logical claim to Israel as there is a legitimate claim of the Irish to northwestern France.

Except there were plenty of other folks already living on the land. Maybe they should have tried Wyoming. Tongue
