Johnson was a great Senator, but there's no need to give him that accolade since he is already our greatest president.

Teddy Kennedy.

Henry Clay, but honorable mention to Webster, Sumner, LBJ, Teddy, Richard Russell, LaFollette Sr., and numerous others.

States' Rights which is what this country was meant to be, a nation of states.

Calhoun was a far more eloquent defender of state's rights than Thurmond. There was a time when defending the notion of state's rights was an actual philosophical  battle among politicians, not just as codeword  to keep the n*ggers down. Thurmond wasn't from that era.

Eugene McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, George McGovern, Mike Gravel, and Wayne Morse should all be on the list of choices instead of LBJ and Ted Kennedy.

Henry Clay, obviously.

In most school textbooks, he is generally the main character of the 1820s-1850s era. He was the most influential Senator in our nation's history, and it is a shame that he never became President.

I concurr.
