Total nationalization would be a bad idea IMO but partial state ownership of resources probably would be good, especially if we used the money to finance R&D or infrastructure.

It would certainly not be my first recourse, but I could support it.

Could you explain why you oppose it?

I don't have an opinion either way yet.

No.

Interesting to note that every Democrat favors it, while every Republican and Independent opposes it.

Leaning no, but I am open to persuasion. Smiley

Total nationalization would be a bad idea IMO but partial state ownership of resources probably would be good, especially if we used the money to finance R&D or infrastructure.

Interesting -can you elaborate?

Well I wouldn't mind if the government established state oil companies or charged some sort of additional tax on extraction. On the other hand as I've said before one of my big issues is really breaking up/liquidating all the TNCs and 'too big to fails' that have a stranglehold on our economy right now. I'm afraid that nationalization would permanently prop up these companies and result in massive conflict of interest. Look how many advances the oil and car industries have blocked already (e.g. electric cars, scaling back highways, etc.) and just imagine what it would be like if the government directly owned/co-owned them from the start....

The obvious method is charging royalties for extraction, which is already done.

And I have to echo other posters' surprise at the near unanimity of Dems on this forum in favor of nationalization.  I really shouldn't have been surprised; "moderates" and "liberals" on this forum tend to be immoderate and illiberal.

What could possibly be a reasoned argument for nationalizing them?  And where will the government get the money to buy them?

What this poll means is that if a Republican President tried to nationalize, in, say, 2013, she could face very little principled opposition.

No (D).  I do not favor nationalizing the oil, because while they are power and bottom-line hungry machines, the government isn't that much better.  The government already has our health care and I'm not exactly sure if they'll handle that properly, and I don't want to go any further down the socialist path.  I believe in a free market and thus the oil companies, while their actions are despicable at times, are free to participate in this market as they wish.  We should just have stricter regulations on them so they don't monopolize and manipulate the industry in a way that would hurt the average consumer at 7-11.
