Just bear with me on this scenario, since it's just a scenario and all.

Let's assume Ron Paul defeats Obama in 2012 against all odds, and that Gary Johnson is the incumbent VP. After managing to pull the economy out of the garbage and repealing the PATRIOT Act, Paul decides not to run for a second term in 2016 due to age issues. Johnson takes the Republican nomination and selects governor Ron Micheli of Wyoming as his running mate, due to Micheli's more conservative libertarian views. The Democrats nominate Russ Feingold, who chooses Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont as his own running mate, to unify the hardcore Democratic base. President Paul's approval rating at the time of the election hovers steadily in the mid-high 50s.

Discuss with maps.

(And again, I'd like to remind people not to leap down my throat first thing and accuse me of being a hack. I just like making scenarios.)

Sanders would never agree to run on the Democratic ticket.

Substitute for whoever. I just went for the first candidate that sprang to mind.

A few states flip in both directions from Paul's 08 victory, but still a landslide win for Vice President Johnson.
