I'm assuming your talking about the large swing to McCain?

Yes, race played a part. But this county has been trending Republican for a while. I think it voted for McConnell in 2008 too, while the surrounding counties voted Democratic. I believe there's a large evangelical presence there, which may explain why it's become Republican faster than other rural coal counties.

not just the strong swing to mccain.

it is the long term republican trend that is surprising.  much like beaver co. pa
