How so?  In terms of electability (these days, at least) you have a point, but the Alliance is not a protestant or unionist party.

In theory, yeah, but the Alliance stands for the exact same things as the UUP.

Knowledge of NI politics fail.

The Alliance is the party of:
~ Liberal Protestants ("liberal" in the social-liberal sense, not the Continental sense, which belongs to the UUP (sort of, not totally), or the American sense, which belongs to the PUP)
~ Non-Irish or British immigrants (especially non-Christians)
~ Moderate Catholic tactical voters

The party does vaguely say that "things are okay" with regards to the current union of NI and the UK, but they wouldn't be opposed to a merge with Ireland, either, if the majority supported it (and I suspect that, if in government, they would support a compromise that gave most of the Catholic areas back to Ireland).

Hmm, perhaps I'm missing something. That would appear to be a liberal and less Protestant version of the UUP. Certainly they collaborate with the UUP more than any other party.
