Why Gramps, that would be impeding their - liberty - to indoctrinate their children by whatever means necessary!

Oh, and abortion is EEEEEEEEEVIL.

I don't agree with this, but why hijack your own thread with some stupid comment not relating to disciplining children?

It's absolutely related to the material at hand, though your ideological blinders may make it seem otherwise. What these parents did was retroactively abort their child.

Well if this is your view, I'll jump off the whacky train and leave the thread to  you and your delusions.

So their actions didn't result in the death of their child?

It may not be coincidence that all the children involved here were adopted. At a very late stage in the case of the Californian sisters.

Just throwing that out...

Just cogs in the machine - it is rather useless to 'blame' them.

Very sad. Conservative Christians need to learn that religion is not an excuse to deny anyone their human rights.

It's things like this that make me wish public hangings were still the common form of execution.

Terrible. These individuals should certainly face punishment for their crimes, though I'd guess they are probably not all there mentally to begin with.

How exactly did the girl die (what caused her to stop breathing)?  I didn't see that.  If possible, push for 2nd degree murder, but if it was because of "punishment," they may not be able to get 2nd degree.  In that case, push for voluntary manslaughter and child abuse charges.

Here it is:

According to the authorities, forceful and numerous whippings, apparently with plumbing line, may have caused tissue breakdown so massive that Lydia's vital organs could no longer function.

So basically they beat her so much and so severely that her body just couldn't cope with it and it shut down.

As far as charging manslaughter instead of murder, I don't think that's going to fly. While they may not have intended to kill the girl, it was a foreseeable consequence and their torment of her was planned and systematic. I stress the word torment - this was torture as it went far beyond ordinary child abuse. This is a serious crime, and if a death is caused in the commission of another serious crime it can be legally considered murder.

But Winston, Einzige is suggesting that what they did was equivalent to a woman having an abortion and we don't do that to them, right?   (I'm  just being sarcastic, because I do agree with you)

Well I think that is exactly the purpose of religion - an excuse to deny people their human rights.

Odds are, you would both think I'm a right-wing, religious nut, but let's make something quite clear: this is not  a "Christian" thing. People are constantly taking the Bible and twisting it and taking it out of context to condone whatever they want to do.

Child discipline is one thing. I'm in favor of it. I received it when I needed it (probably got away without a few times I needed it, too), and won't hesitate to discipline any kids I may have should it be necessary. But, child abuse is something totally different. What I read about in those articles wasn't discipline it was abuse.

As for the people who tormented those kids, they should just be glad that I don't get to choose their punishment. Angry

Hey ScottM, just wanted to say this.....when I see R-MS, I have certain instant impressions that are certainly quite negative.

But I've really enjoyed your commentary, and I'm quite pleased there are sane conservatives from your state Smiley

Well, believe me, most people around here have the same feelings about, say, New England liberals.

I always try to be thoughtful with my comments and beliefs, and I can respect anyone in whom I see the same thing - even if I don't agree with them.

Yeah I can imagine...didn't intend any disrespect with that comment.
