Al Gore narrowly defeats George W. Bush in 2000. Due to the butterfly effect, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (a Democrat) is not killed in a plane crash in late 2002. The Republicans still nominate Norm Coleman against him. The economy is in the toilet and Gore invades Afghanistan after 9/11, but there is no talk about invading Iraq. Who would win in this scenario?

I think Paul Wellstone narrowly defeats Norm Coleman by about 51-46%.

Firstly I doubt the economy would be so bad, probably in a mild recession but not in the toilet. This is very difficult to call as a big positive for Wellstone was that he voted against the Iraq War. He thought it would doom him but it actually helped him quite a bit in the polls. The biggest variable is the President's approval ratings. Are they in the in the mid-50s or are they like Obama's today. If they are low 50s high 40s than I think Coleman wins, if they are higher than Welly wins.

The is no Iraq War in this scenario. Also, President Gore's approval ratings are 45% on election day 2002 in this scenario. Finally, even if the economy was in a mild recession, people would still feel bad about it.

Coleman 52% Wellstone 45%

If Gore is unpopular and there is no Iraq War to run against than I think Welly looses.

Couldn't he distance himself from Gore, though? Besides, wasn't Wellstone kinda entrenched by this point?

There are some people where I can't stop being a hack for. That's why I try not to Comment on Palin and Coleman.
