Yes, why not? It would depend when, though. Maybe Muskie would have become President eventually if Humphrey would have won in 1968.

Yes, why not? It would depend when, though. Maybe Muskie would have become President eventually if Humphrey would have won in 1968.

I doubt it, barring assassination or resignation. Humphrey would have been overwhelmed and would witness the cracking up of FDR's coalition, when the South, the minorities, labor, and the progressives split or weakened. The south and many of the "hippies" loathed ol' Hubert. It wouldn't even be assured that he would win re-election.

Even if Humprey loses in 1972, Muskie might win later on. For instance, if the economy is bad in 1976 or 1980 and we have a Republican President, Muskie might win the nomination due to his status as a former VP and then win the general election. I said Muskie might have become President eventually if Humphrey won in 1968--it was by no means a guarantee. BTW, I think Humphrey would have been reelected in 1972 due to the good economy and him withdrawing U.S. troops from Vietnam.
