Because Wallace was generally a pretty poor candidate in Appalachia.

Because Wallace was generally a pretty poor candidate in Appalachia.

Pretty much. He typically did best in states and counties with medium-sized black populations. That is, those with not enough blacks to vote Democrat, but still enough that racial tensions had formed in the population. He also did well in suburbs of large urban areas like Detroit for this reason. Appalachia has very few blacks whatsoever.
