This will be a wacky scenario but here it goes.
In 1964, George Wallace runs better and wins Maryland but Johnson wins the Democratic nomination. Wallace threatens a third party run but changes his mind and does something unthinkable. With the threat of a Wallace third party run, robbing of what little support that Goldwater has, the unthinkable occurs in dire moments for the candidate from Arizona. George Wallace would back Goldwater and Goldwater would shock everyone by announcing that Wallace would be his runningmate. The Goldwater/Wallace ticket goes down in flames as Rockefeller and other prominent moderate and liberal Republicans decide against a third party run and choose to back Johnson.
In 1968, a more toned down segregationist Wallace announces his intentions to run for the Republican nomination under a "Law and Order" platform and a "due speed" pullout from Vietnam. In a bloody and bullish campaign and nomination, Wallace wins on the balloting over Rockefeller. At the convention, Rockefeller speaks and says he will run for President under a revived Progressive Party banner. In an infamously caught moment, Wallace orders Rockefeller's mike to be pulled, with this it angers Rockefeller further, pushing some delegates over as supportive southern delegates brawl with some northern delegates. In the environment of anger and hatred, Rockefeller and nearly all of the northern delegates and handfuls everywhere else, march out of the convention. Humphrey takes the Democratic nomination in a anger filled nomination as police and rioters clash in the convention city of Chicago like OTL.
So with Wallace, Humphrey and Rockefeller in the running, who wins? What does the map look like? Discuss this wacky scenario, with maps of course if you wish!
