Taft would win easily.  He was a great campaigner, passionate in his convictions and had a lot of popularity in the midwest and certain regions of the south.  He could have chosen either a moderate, east coast Republican to balance his ticket, or a westerner to lock Truman out of the west.  Either way, the country was looking for change 3 years after WWII and Taft's "America first" message would have won the hearts of many people in the key states.
