Where can I follow the election night on-line? And, more importantly, around what time  should we expect all the drama to take place?

Anyone know of a good live TV stream?

ABC did a live stream last time and presumably will again. And they'll have Antony Green, the election geek's election geek.

As for following the campaign online, the best site is probably still Pollbludger. In terms of resources, the Green Guide is indispensable, the Tally Room has lots of poll-by-poll maps and stuff and for old elections, Adam Carr's archive is amazing.

For a moment, I thought you meant Anthony King, the Professor who has appeared on many BBC Election Nights.

This stream was posted by me when Rudd was being removed. It seems currently not to be working, but it's not a 24-hour stream, so....yeah. It might be working for election night.

What time do polls open and close?

http://www.skynews.com.au/ will have a live stream, if there's no working stream for ABC on election day. Atleast us UKers won't have to stay up until the early hours like for US elections. Tongue

8am to 6pm local time (and local time obviously varies by state - WA is two hours behind the eastern states).

As I recall, Australia has 5 different time zones when you figure in the fact that some jurisdictions observe DST and others don't. What time zone is each state in now?

Yeah, it can get confusing during summer, but nowhere has daylight savings at the moment. It's also interesting that SA (and NT, according to that site), is only half an hour behind the east coast, rather than a full hour, which would be simpler. WA is two hours behind, they've had referenda on daylight savings and I think they've rejected it, but I can't remember for certain and I'm too lazy to google it. From a work (or any other perspective, for that matter), I've never really had much to do with SA, NT or WA, so I've usually just known that Vic and NSW and Canberra have daylight savings, and if it's summer, they're an hour ahead of Brisbane (where I used to live/work), and if it's not summer, they're the same time. In summer, they start work before me, but they knock off at 4pm Brisbane time, so don't expect an interstate office to be able to answer any queries you might have. Now I'm in Melbourne and don't have much (work) to do with Brisbane so it doesn't really worry me that much.

I can never remember if Tasmania has daylight savings. I think it does, but I can't remember. I have never had anything to do with them, anyway.

According to that map Tassie does have DST. Though it doesn't answer WA.

WA definitely does not use DST.  I was arranging a conference call that included a student in Perth this last summer, and this very issue came up.

A hung parliament is certainly a possibility.

Any thoughts on how Bennelong will go?

Narrow Lib gain. I guess a lot of Bennelong voters just wanted rid of Howard in '07.

It will almost certainly go to the party that wins nationally.

Gillard makes "Yes We Will" the mantra at the launch. How original. Wink

"Yes we might" would be a good motto for an underdog. Grin

A hung parliament, the first Green MP and an ousted prime minister during the prior term.

Britain did it better. Wink

Australia have an American-way of counting the votes, right?

Yup, none of that "And the number of votes cast was as follows..." we have, it's all "__% reporting."

It counts them in the normal way, yes. It's Britain that's... unusual... which sucks from the pov of election geekery Sad

I think our tradition of the town hall count and stuff is pretty cool, except we can't do amazing maps like other countries do.
