In a shocker, the Republicans nominate Edwards Bates of Missouri. The Democrats split and the Southern wing nominated Vice President John C. Breckinridge but at the "Northern" wing in Baltimore, Stephen Douglas is assassinated, shocking the convention. The Northern wing would finally settle on former President Franklin Pierce as their candidate. The Constitutional Union Party nominates famed Texan, Sam Houston, as their nominee.

With the Northern wing nominating Pierce, talks quickly form between Pierce and Breckinridge and a compromise is reached, Pierce as the presidential nominee and Breckinridge as the Vice President nominee again. Breckinridge accepts and lead some southern delegates back into the fold of the Democratic party. The remaining Southern delegates are angered at the perceived "selling out" by Breckinridge and in a flurry nominate William Lowndes Yancey as their nominee.

How does the election play out in this different 1860 election? Discuss, with maps if you wish.
