Your opposition is noted, and was expected.

Look, I will vote against the amendment, without even thinking about it, because this amendment has nothing to do the initial bill.

A new bill for that, please.

You should make that another bill, because I support that idea. It gives the VP some power and a role in Atlasia.

I move to invoke cloture.

I don't believe anything else can really be debated here.

I do not believe that this bill has near enough votes to pass, and indeed, I will also vote against it.

We might as well end debate and then vote it down quickly.

I second the motion for cloture.

Cloture is now at a vote, please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain.

Aye

Also, forgive my ignorance of procedure here, but, if the motion for cloture fails, the bill fails, correct? Or does the debate just continue?

Debate continues. To fail it the sponsor would have to withdraw or someone would have to motion to table it.

This is the first cloture vote in quite a while. Since Fritz's cloture vote I believe two senates ago? And before that who even knows.

Aye

Not sure why cloture was called - no amendments on the floor and debate had subsided. We'd probably have been at final vote quicker just leaving things alone.

Debate continues. To fail it the sponsor would have to withdraw or someone would have to motion to table it.

Which isn't to say filibusters can't happen. I remember one that succeeded several Senates ago. After all, if the votes exist to block cloture, the sponsor may choose to withdraw it in order to quit wasting a slot on the floor on a bill that cannot pass. Then again, the sponsor may choose to hold out & wait for the next Senate & hope that the composition changes to where cloture can be achieved.

Of course, if there is an extensive queue of bills, it might be wiser to let the bill on the floor die, so that the Senate can get to work on other matters. At the same time, it would likely be a while before the bill could return to the floor, even if it were re-introduced immediately.

At any rate, I'll quit pontificating now. It is merely that I find matters of Senate protocol quite intriguing.

Whew!  Now, if Jas will stop amending this, perhaps we can get something done here.  Tongue

As I've previously stated, my only purpose is to make the elections a little more interesting, and more democratic.  Currently, a voter cannot vote for a presidential candidate of one party, and a VP candidate of another- unless the parties themselves build their tickets as such.  This amendment gives voters this freedom.

I will agree with Jas to a point, however: the Vice-Presidency is a largely useless office, despite its necessity.  I therefore further propose the following amendment to this amendment.  This should be added as section 2, if adopted:

This makes the Vice-Presidency a very significant office indeed, and puts the question of who will lead the Senate into the hands of the voters rather than just the Senate.  And why does the Senate need both a President and a PPT??

Why not also give him a vote in all votes rather than just ties, while you're at it?

Could the honerable President Pro Tempore please elaborate on his previous statement. Tongue

(I think I will go back to speaking on the senate floor like this. Trouble is its takes so damn long to write simple responses that way).

Just an update. There are three Ayes, one Nay, and two Abstaining, so this vote is still ongoing as far as I understand it.

If we didnt bother with cloture we could be on a final vote right now. Tongue
