What was the Norwegian Nobel Committee smoking, and where can I get some?  The Peace Prize has been a political creature for decades, but whether you agreed with the committee's choices or not, at least you could point to something concrete the laureate had done to deserve the award.  While Obama certainly would like to do things of the sort that attracts the committee's attention, he hasn't really done them yet.

Which President awarded the Prize has deserved it? Roosevelt? Certainly not. Wilson? Most certainly not. Carter? Yes, but he wasn't the President when he won it. Obama would only deserve it if his rhetoric matched his reality; but I can't name anyone else who especially does, either.

While Roosevelt's efforts to broker peace in the Russo-Japanese War were overhyped , as were Wilson's efforts to found a League of Nations, as least they were efforts that had had a actual concrete effect one could point out.

Roosevelt also championed every American war and what would today be hilariously called "police actions" of his three-decade career, and Wilson dragged the nation headlong into a Great War. Obama's win looks almost reasonable in comparison.

It's a Peace Prize, Einzige, not a Pacifism Prize.

It's a Peace Prize, Einzige, not a Pacifism Prize.

And the other two Presidents contributed exactly nothing to the cause of peace, and both actively did real and quantifiable damage to it. Better a President with no accomplishments than two with net-negative accomplishments in the given area.

Unless I misread something, Ernest just defended Woodrow Wilson. Strange.

Don't look for anything approaching consistency with him: the Left is his Enemy, and their enemies are his Allies, regardless of position.

I would support the award but, if I may paraphrase Eddie Izzard, there hasn't been much of an actual act of bringing peace from Obama, more a "procedure"

To be fair, Obama's probably the most deserving sitting President to win the Prize.

At the moment, he's the most deserving sitting President to win anything.

This is outrageous: Obama should have won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008, not in 2009 ! Grin

Because he managed to appease Hillary and not to be stabbed in the back by her.
For the moment, this is his best "peace" achievement in the world...

Well, they gave it to him to "encourage him to go in the direction he said he would go". Cool.

After the preemptive wars of Bush we have the preemptive peace award for Obama.

Weird, actually, am not able yet to see what exactly this event means, maybe some actual psychological febricity, thrill.

But, that's a bad move from the Nobel, now maybe he'll feel he would have to be hyper-pacifist to make honor to this prize while sometimes a politician has to be tough, it would weaken him actually, the right would see him more like a pussy, and people around the world would think "what is that?? he did nothing and he has it" making some resentment.

And yes, anyways, people should get an award for something they did. And a politician in function shouldn't have such thing, better when he has no more power to get it.

And, this:

Obama will next win the Physics prize for his ability to walk on water.....

I'm sure the Israelis, who were probably the real target of all of this, are saying to themselves, "We're screwed now!"

black helicopters aside, unless you think the Nobel committee is a bunch of Obama worshippers (which I don't), would there be any other reason to give Obama the Nobel at this point in time?

that is a possibility, but, aside from throwing Obama a bone for apologizing for America, I think this was an attempt to give Obama more power in the Middle East peace process and to attempt to keep Obama on his present course.

Because Obama is the first American President to actually attempt to portray Muslims and Arabs more generally as human beings, and not impose an aggressive foreign policy propping up the State of Israel for eschatological reasons?

If Obama were anti-Israel (as you pretend in your paranoid masturbatory fantasies of the end-times), and the Nobel Committee is anti-Israel (as you pretend in your paranoid masturbatory fantasies of the end-times), why would either need to control the other to achieve its nefarious, diabolical purposes?

Alright, this thread is going to be quite predictable.

Liberals: Congratulations!

Conservatives: Nobel prize is a joke prize.

I think the committee could have made a much better choice. Essentially, the President wins the award because he is not the moronic tool Bush was.  Hardly inspiring.

If so, the world media organized itself for this, unlikely.

I'm sure the Israelis, who were probably the real target of all of this, are saying to themselves, "We're screwed now!"

that is a possibility, but, aside from throwing Obama a bone for apologizing for America, I think this was an attempt to give Obama more power in the Middle East peace process and to attempt to keep Obama on his present course.

If so that's a good intention, that's just pretty irrelevant and not very smart to give an award.

dude...this is nothing more than an attempt to contol obama

Well, euh, really, I think you should take some distance with the Jewish paranoia, actually.
