Just in case you wanna see where I was born and raised: Last week, the
heute show (mostly comparable to
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) aired a (satirical) report about Brunsbüttel. That city of about 14,000 inhabitants is known for its (meanwhile decommissioned) nuclear power plant and for its entrance to the Kiel Canal. (Its English naming is actually pretty unfortunate, as Kiel lies at the other entrance to the Canal; in German the water path is therefore simply called North Sea-Baltic Sea-Canal.)
And exactly that canal, which provides a crucial shipping link between the North Sea and the Baltic states, led to the occasion of the TV report: the German-American trade relationship; Brunsbüttel has been planning on constructing LNG terminals - the first ones in Germany ever. The crux of the matter: Fracking will have been employed in order to extract the gas that will be shipped from the USA to Germany. Ecological crusaders are therefore up in arms about that project.
And yes, Brunsbüttel is really as bleak and dull as shown in the clip...
