It's not that I have no confidance. I was in a relationship back in February. and it ended because of what I do for a living.

But that's nothing. My first girlfriend broke up with me when she found out I was a Democrat.

They were breaking up with you anyway.  It seems like bullsh**t excuses as to why.  I've gotten what I did for a living along with living with parents as another good one.  I only accepted a few reasons, most of them are excuses.  I once had a grad student who was bogged down and I could tell in her voice she really was so I bought it.  The one after that said she had work the next morning at 8 and I asked her to go to another bar in Manayunk.  I didn't buy that because I said we'd go for drinks after dinner and she said nothing about work before.  You have to think in terms of whether you buy it or you don't.  I don't know your situation but you have to move on.

Well, there's not much I can really do about it now, Flyers.

I don't really get out alot, except with my close friends who are all in relationships. I've accepted it and moved on.

I was a moderately conservative Republican when I met my boyfriend (a self-described socialist) almost 4 years ago. He helped me shift leftward by showing me how non-Americans in and outside America see America.

Why worry about what non Americans think?

Wow, a hard-core redneck-style Southerner who happens to be Roman Catholic.  That's a rarity.  For some reason, I always thought you were Southern Baptist or a member of some other Protestant.  I guess based on my travels and contacts with the Deep South, I always thought of it as a solidly Protestant area.  Other than a few Louisiana soldiers of French descent, I bet Catholics were a very small minority in the Confederate forces.

What about the thousands of Maryland soldiers? Also, I believe Patrick Cleburne was Catholic as well. Also, the Catholic Church and the Confederate States. Pope Pius IX supported the confederacy and saw the American North as having "threatening tendencies" (probably because of the Norths' harsh repression of Judiasm and Irish Catholicism).

It is said that the American Civil war was just an extension of the conflicts between the British, Scots, Irish and Welsh. The North, was of course, dominated by people of British stock descent, while the south was a whole hodgepodge of groups, mainly Scots-irish/Scots/irish/welsh. I believe their was actually a mix of Irish Catholics with the other groups you've mentioned. For example my wifes ancestors were all Protestants of Irish descent.

Was your wife Protestant?  It would be interesting if she converted, since I always thought that usually it's the husband who converts to the wife's religion.  This happened with both President Bush and his brother, as well as my parents.

I take it the Catholicism came from the Austrian branch of your family.

I didn't know I had to Convert  Tongue

Actually I am still United Methodist--albeit I haven't been to church lately. To answer the main question, the Irish who fought for the Confederacy were  almost exclusively of protestants of Northern Irish Descent, their  ancestors of course being largely Scots-Irish Presbyterians and Anglo-Irish Episcopalians .  Most of these soldiers had  descended from Soldiers who fought with Washington in the Revolutionary War--as had my family.  Now, in some states, Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina, there were enclaves of Catholic Confederates, but they were far outnumbered by those of Protestant descent.  Of course, that was a direct opposite of the Union forces where the Irish soldiers were primarily Catholic.

As far as famous Celtic Confederates:  Patrick Cleburne, PGT Beauregard, Robert E. Lee, Thomas Jonathon Jackson(of Ulster Descent), JEB Stuart, and Jubal Early to name a few.

That didn't happen in my family, although my mom would've left Catholicism anyway. If it weren't for that I doubt either one would've. I know of plenty of mixed marriages where neither one converted, so it's usually not an issue.

Neat.  I'd really like to get into geneaology someday.  I know a rough history of my family, but lately I've been asking my grandmother a lot of questions about my mother's side.  She's in her 80s and, well, you've got to grab these opportunities while you still can.

When my aunt had died, she gave me all of her books and records on our family tree.  I look at it and can't make heads or tails out of it.  I think I need to hire someone to sit down, create a database, and let them plug all of this data in and create a "tree" from there.  However, some parts which I was able to read and understand was how my great great grandfather was a miner in England, some of my relatives were indoctrinated with the Cherokee shortly before they were forced to travel down the Trail of Tears, and some of my relatives were a part of the Shelton gang in Illinois during prohibition.  Outside of that, it's just names, dates, and places for generations of my relatives and their in-laws.
