Ever read The Screwtape Letters, Nation?  Quite a piece of work there.

Ahh, I've read parts of it. An amazing piece of work indeed -- Mere Christianity is one of the best books I've ever read, and his pieces on love, grief, etc always make me happy.

Are you sure you're not "black Irish"? Those were Irish that mixed with Spaniards when the Spanish Armada wrecked on the Irish coast.

Myth.  Inhabitants of Western Ireland have always had a prevalence for dark hair /light eyes and geneticists believe these are the original pre-celtic inhabitants of Ireland.  The Welsh have these traits even more than Western Irish- look at Catherine Zeta Jones and Tom Jones.  There might have been a few Spanish that made it to Irish shores but they did not significantly change genes.  Interestingly, the Irish share a lot of genetic markers with the Basques.

Yeah, that was what I heard.  And the French and the Irish carry remarkable genetic similarities that neither group shares with the English.

States trust me it is a myth.  It is the probably the product of an overactive Irish imagination and love for the tall tale.  Inhabitants of Western Ireland do tend to have darker hair than E. Ireland but the complexion is usually pale and eyes light.  There are exceptions of course.

http://www.darkfiber.com/blackirish

Many Irish had dark hair etc long before the Spanish Armada in 1588.  Genetic information points to this trait being from the original inhabitants of Ireland around 8000-9000 years ago long before the Celtic invasions.

My wife is Black Irish and can trace her roots back to Spanish Ancestors who ended up in Ireland. Her family tree is researched back to around 660 AD.

She may be of Irish descent that happens to originally come from Spain but the common assertion that dark hair and other traits comes from the Armada is patently false.  Traits are seen in Paleolithic inhabitants and descendants  of Ireland and Wales.  Again look at Tom Jones or Catherine Zeta Jones who are Welsh.  No Armada or Spanish invasion there.

I'm young enough and I STILL think of the Orioles when I hear Miller...He's got one of the best voices for announcing in all of sports.

That SOB Peter Angelos basically fired him.  I think it is safe to say that Angelos is not my favorite person.

I still stick by the Orioles -- even though they suck. Palmeiro is my all-time favorite player (got to meet him in person years ago at a "Baysox vs Orioles" game. I was jaw-dropped and he jokingly replied "I'm his cousin."

I still can't believe Bowie has a AA team.  They stared play several years after we moved to Wisconsin.

The sad thing about the O's is that they have no excuse for their suckage.  At least the Brewers can claim the whole small market / small payroll sob story.  The O's spend a fortune for their 70 wins year after year.  Still, I stand by them... and my Cubbies in the NL.

Does being a Southern Baptist preclude being a Liberal Democrat?

I actually know of an extremely liberal Baptist church in Madison (Nekoma neighborhood, where my parents used to live).

According to surveys done by various Welsh Governmental offices and stuff, the stereotype of people in Wales (according to people in England) is:

"A land of short dark men singing hymns in the shadow of slag heaps"

This was the case in the '50's as well. Probably before then.
