It was bad enough when Mark Sanford got caught cheating after his mysterious disappearance.  Then he refused to resign and the Republican dominated legislature is now threatening impeachment.  Plus, you've got Joe Wilson's outburst during Obama's healthcare speech.  It seems like the Republican party is on the rocks in the Palmetto State.  My question is, will this cause widespread losses across the state or will the damage be isolated to the governor's race perhaps only resulting in different Republican nominee who goes on to win?

Not particularly.  The South Carolina Democratic Party has been in such a poor shape that it hasn't been able to take advantage of the gift horses the Republicans keep handing them.  I see no evidence that it has gotten better.  If anything it has gotten worse.  Clyburn is the face of the Democratic Party in South Carolina these days and even ignoring the racial aspect, his policy positions are not the type that can draw South Carolina independents in a statewide contest.  The state Democratic party would be better off if Clyburn were just a Congressman and not Majority Whip.

There's an outside chance the Democrats might pick up the governor's mansion, but I doubt Democrats will hold any other statewide office in South Carolina for a long time, nor will they pick up seats in the legislature (I believe they've lost one or two seats in special elections since 2008).

The Republicans are going to hold the Governor's mansion, trust me.

Hence why I said "outside chance". With all the troubles and the closest thing to a top-tier recruit for the Democrats (Jim Rex) there's a chance of an upset, but it's a small one.

I don't see an issue. The South Carolina Democratic Party is in such poor shape that they won't even be able to capitalize on the Sanford scandal. As long as folks such as James Clyburn are the face of the party, they'll never get back into power. The national Democratic Party has made some inroads among coastal South Carolinians, but I haven't seen that translate over to state-level races. Plus, I don't know of a candidate that the Democrats could field that would make a competitive race. Now, if the GOP nominates Andre Bauer, that may change, because if that's the case, I'll be voting Democrat.

Remember, this is the state that kept re-electing Strom Thurmond into office........

Unless the GOP denounces the South, no way are they in trouble in South Carolina.

That seems to be the general consensus.  The reason I asked is because I didn't know much about the South Carolina Dems strength and it seems apparent that its because they have no strength.  The only thing I was going on was the results from SC-1 and SC-2 in 2008 as the Republicans seemed to have underperformed there.

Yeah, the South Carolina Dems are generally extremely unorganized and not very well put together. The most powerful Democrat here is Jim Clyburn, and the opinion of him here, is pretty negative. Not to say the Democrats couldn't win, its just extremely unlikely. If they nominate Jim Rex, they'll get creamed for sure.
