I think the short-list includes-

Brian Schweitzer
Kristen Gillibrand
Joe Biden (he's really old, but I can't think of anyone else)

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Senator Evan Bayh
Senator Alexi Giannoulias
Senator Mark Warner
Senator Russ Feingold
Senator Kay Hagan
Senator or House Majority/Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (He'll should be Reid's replacement)
Representative Stephanie Herseth-Sadlin
Vice President Joe Biden
Governor Brian Schweitzer
Senator Kristen Gillibrand
Senator Joe Sestak
Senator Mark Begich
Governor Andrew Cuomo
Senator or Governor Lisa Madigan (She could take either the senate seat (If Durbin retires) or the Governorship in 2014)
Senator Beau Biden
Speaker of the House or House Minority Leader Rahm Emanuel (I think he'll go back to house once he's finished at the White House)
Senator Claire McKaskill

God no I hope Chuck Schumer becomes the new Senate Majority Leader.

In my opinion Joseph A. Sestak, barring an early Obama death that results in a Biden presidency, will be our next Democratic president.

Hillary Clinton, Russ Feingold, or whichever Republican I prefer because no other Democrat deserves to be nominated

Why are people already thinking that we will have Democratic Minorities in 2010? We will need to lose 11 Senate seats and 40 house seats. We have only 19 held seats. That would mean that even some of our most secure senators would have to be wiped out to lose the Senate. On the other hand, it is theoretically very possible that we could be dropped to a significant minority status in the house. If we lost the seats that Clinton did, we would only have like 204 seats, no more than what we had in 2004. Then again, Clinton's approval ratings were in the 40s by this time and Obama's seem to be in the lower to mid 50s. So was Reagan's. Eventually Reagan would go on to lose 26 seats. I would think that would be a more reasonable loss, provided that Obama's presidency seems to be in better shape than Clinton's....and perhaps is further along in its policy than Clinton's as well at this rate. So, if I had to guess, we are going to give up all of our 2008 gains in the house and we could go anywhere between -3 and +2 with our senate seats. So, unless we are ready to stick a fork in the Democratic Party, don't be using the label "minority leader".

If its for 2016, then Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton. With maybe an outside chance of Rahm Emmanuel or Tim Kaine if they're appointed to Cabinet positions.

Any later than that, probably someone who isn't on anyone's radar yet.

If Brian Schweitzer ever gets the Democratic nod for President, I might just jump ship.

Gavin Newsome? He'll be crushed like George McGovern if the Democrats are dumb enough to nominate him.

I disagree, he's actually a pretty moderate fellow when it comes down to the issues, especially economic issues. But it is defiantly a possibility that he could be painted as George McGovern 2.0

It wouldn't surprise me if Tim Kaine ended up being the nominee. He's a popular moderate from a swing state- what could be better electorally?

Of course odds are it will be someone we've never heard of- 2016 is a long way away. Just take Barack Obama. He was a nobody before that speech at the 2004 convention.

Eh, you could lose the house, but the Senate will almost certainly remain in Democratic control.

I hope Gavin Newsom too.  But not for the same reasons you do.

He would ensure an easy Republican victory.

Obama in 2012.

As for 2016, the most likely at this point is Biden if Obama wins in 2012, Clinton if Obama loses....though obviously it's so far off that an accurate prediction cannot be made yet.

Senator Warner. assuming he could survive the primaries, he might be able to pull off Clinton-esque victories in the South.

I'd hope for Hillary or Mark Warner. Joe Biden could be good if Obama is re-elected.

i hate to join the chorus on mark warner, but
Senator Mark Warner (VA)
Gov. Ed Rendell (PA)
Gov. Phil Bredesen (TN)
Gov. Brian Schweitzer (MT)

i rule out the following
Gov. Bill Richardson (scandal)
Hillary Clinton (Too old)
Joe Biden possibly (too old)

i don't understand the Warner-mania either, but I'm a staunch republican so i may be biased. i just listed him because everyone else seems to be raving for him. i think warner stayed out of the 2008 election because there was just too many people - about 8 candidates at the start of it. not enough "oxygen" so to speak.
