I don't really know what to say, this is incredibly sad. I hope that his dream of health care for everyone can finally become a reality, it's a shame he died before he could achieve it.

Even though I knew he was not doing well, still kind of shocking. RIP.

It's hard to find words that aren't cliche or stupid-sounding, but Ted Kennedy really was a great American. We are better off today because of his decades in public service.

Rest in peace.

The Massachusetts legislature didn't get that law requiring a special election changed in time, did they? This means that the Democrats are down to 59 now...I know Kennedy was probably not in suitable condition to make it out on the Senate floor anyway, but now it's definitively one less vote for healthcare.

Not unless the Massachusetts Constitution is significantly stricter about what constitutes an ex-post facto law than the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions are.  Before Blago appointed Burris, there was talk of Illinois changing its law concerning filling the vacancy caused by Obama's resignation to strip the governor of that power.  They could still change the law so that Patrick can appoint someone until the special election.

Wow I feel like an uber douchebag for having that signature. In fact as of this moment I will remove the motivator from the gallery for at least two weeks out of respect for Ted Kennedy. I may not have agreed with him on quite a few things, but damn it he was devoted to public duty. RIP Ted.

It truly does feel sad that Ted Kennedy is dead.

True. The Senate has so few people who ever stand up for the common people, and well, Kennedy was one of them for 47 years.

I feel that same way as so many others - I knew it was coming, but I definitely wasn't prepared when I heard the news. RIP Ted.

4 of the Kennedy siblings died early tragic deaths in the 1940s and 1960s. Another 4 died this decade, with Ted and Eunice a mere 2 weeks apart.Jean Kennedy Smith is the last one left of the nine. As far as I can tell, she's still in good health.

Longest serving Senators of all time.

Byrd 50 years 235 days  - and still serving
Thurmond 47 159 days - Kennedy was 7 months short of beating this. He did beat him for uninterrupted time.
Kennedy 46 years 293 days - RIP
Inouye 46 years 235 days - Elected the same time as Kennedy, will pass him in 2 months.

The best I can personally add is that he was a man who not only did a lot of good, he also enjoyed life tremendously - which sets a good example for us all.

But the real 'good example' set by this man and his aristocratic family is an old one, alas forgotten in this vulgar society - noblesse oblige.

This is terrible.  Even though I disagreed with Ted Kennedy on pretty much everything, he was absolutely brilliant in everything he did.  He will be truly missed.
