Whats the problem with Byrd? sure he has some quirky traditionalist ideas but he's not that bad... and dont bring up the KKK thing coz its been beaten to death and he's already said that he was young and it was a mistake...

I am not saying it was exceptable... far from it!... it is just that when Byrd was young (!) the idea of jioing the Klan in WV was proably for many young men quite apealing...

I would guess that Byrd joined the Klan to advance his political career (in a state as rural as WV name recognition is all), which is a pretty shady thing to do (though stuff like that was common at the time... and several prominant politicians have done worse), and when he no longer needed it (ie: to get into the State House) he discarded it.
