Now we just need to figure out what this war has to do with freedom.

Lets all spare a thought for the British and other allied soldiers who too have died, including a brave Scottish soldier from my hometown.

I didn't know you guys were now in the (spontaneously) liberating nations business.
I don't like attempts at history falsification.

I don't like pretending your opinion matters, so I won't.

Iraq is a free country because of our fallen soldiers. I think we all can agree on that much.

I will never call Iraq free until I have seen free, anonymous and universal elections (preferably using proportional representation).
If the TRUE reason(s) of going to war can apparently not stand the light of day, then this does not bode well for the feel-good idealistic ideas I've seen displayed after the great WMD disappearing act (funny how that issue is hardly mentioned anymore).

Yeah! Republicans don't have any history of liberating anyone! How silly me! Lincoln was a democrat.

*sigh* I create a thread to salute the fallen and within hours it becomes a partisan pissing contest

Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative.  Respect and remember the fallen.

Lincoln was a Whig.  He was a Whig  representative of the Illinois legislature from 1834-1841 and the US Congress 1847-1849.  He opposed the Mexican American war because he thought that Polk had violated the constitution to bring the country into war.  He joined the Republican party in 1856.

Lincon was a liberal and Lincoln would be shocked at what the Republican party has become today.

Yeah, Iraqis were surely free under Saddam.

Yea, and they wont be so free when a shi'ite theocracy takes over, nor will they be safe with the hoards of terroists this war has brought into Iraq.

Look, I'm all for helping oppressed people, but Iraq is a BIG, IN, MESS!  Bush and his admin. handled this so irresponsibly that we might see an even worse gov't rise to power in Iraq, and the cost to us was far too great.  No, I will not say these men and women died in vain, Saddam is gone, but they were betrayed by their president, who saw their lives as only second place to his ambitions.  Bush should be immpeached.

That said, we should honor all the people lost in this war, from all different nations.

My hope is that none of these 1000 died in vain. I hope for each American death their has been 10,000 Iraqi children live a full life without worrying about a Gestapo syle police force beating down their door and torturing them.

NJ Mayor NixonNow,

I am going to say this in all honesty, no bitterness, and frankly I'm just letting you know out of courtesy in case you can't see it yourself......

But,

I really do find your picture of the burning WTC as a backdrop for a smiling, grining "First Couple" with the tag "Steady Leadership" the most shamful, offensive politisization of 3000 innocent dead Americans I HAVE EVER WITNESSED.

Pretty Freakin tasteless......
Just thought you should know.......

I am still iffy regarding the merits of the war in Iraq, but now is not the time to bring up political arguments.  No matter what the circumstances behind them are, deaths should always, always be treated apolitically.  They are not something to be celebrated; they are not something to be used in a campaign; and they are not something to be used to further a cause.  Have some respect.  Leave your differences at the door in this thread and ignore people who make inflammatory posts.  Now is not the time for arguments; those can come later.

Whatever your view of the war in Iraq is, these brave men and women gave their lives in the earnest belief that, in doing so, they could make the world a better place.  In my view, there is no act more selfless and courageous than that.

I salute their service, mourn their passing, and hope that their deaths prove to be meaningful.

Elcorazan:  Your reading is correct.

Mddem:  While I agree with you on NixonNow's sig, this is not the right thread for it.

Gabu:  Amen.
