one (silly) option:  he get reelected, vietnam is a lesser issue with less GI's. after 2 full terms the president's brother RFK is elected (full 2 terms) and in 76' Teddy Kennedy wins. but in 1980 he loses to one Reagen. after 20 Kennedy years thr next 20 are what we know - Reagen, Bush sr, Clinton. In 1999 jfk jr do not die in a crash plane but after his father pressure seek the presidency and narrowly defeat bush jr. the Kennedy again controlled the white house. but Jfk jr plane does crash in july 2001 and vp Al Gore is President. he wants to nominate sen john Kerrt as vp but a sex scandal rules thats out. on 9/11 the plane that was aum at the white house hit the west wing and kills president gore. with no vp the speaker oh the house Dennis Hastert become president.....

blimey!!!!!

I think if JFK was not assassinated, then Vietnam would no way have been such a big deal as I don't think he would have got fully involved. However, I don't think the civil rights movement would have done as well as LBJ managed to pass many of his and Kennedy's legislations on the "sympathy vote" after Kennedy had died.

I would agree that Robert Kennedy would become the Democratic candidate as by now I don't think LBJ would be willing to run as one of the reasons he gave for not seeking re-election in '68 was that he was afraid of a heart attack as those in his family did have a history of heart attacks around his age. So we would have Robery Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey campaigning in '68 to be the democratic candidate. The fact that Robert's brother had most probably been a very successful two term president I think would sway the choice to him, angering Humphrey, who had again lost out on his chance to be President against another Kennedy.

So in '68, I reckon we would have Robert Kennedy, an East Coast Democrat and would pick as his VP candidate a Southern Democrat to balance the ticket. Possibly George Smathers of Florida who had run for the candidacy that year.

In 1968, Richard Nixon, would NOT run for Presidency as, having been beaten before by another Kennedy, I don't think he would risk it, especially if it was on the back of a successful 8 years under JFK. Instead, I think someone such as Rockefeller might run with Agnew as a possible VP. Robert Kennedy would triumph over this pair I think with a good margin although, not by a landslide.

Robert Kennedy, arguably more interested in civil rights than his brother, would pass many of the legislations that would not have passed in my opinion had JFK survived as they would have lacked the sympathy votes. Towards the end of 1971, I reckon that Robert Kennedy would have been assassinated, along with Martin Luther King who may or may not have survived slightly longer. Smathers would now take over the Presidency for the final year, although, I think he would lose out on being the Democratic Presidential candidate. Hubert Humphrey would again run to be the Democratic candidate but I think that now he may just get the ticket and choose Muskie as his Vice Presidential candidate (similar to in 1968).

I think that now, Richard Nixon would see an opportunity and leap upon it, hoping that this would be his year. In a tight race, although Humphreys masses up a sympathy vote, he is seen to be slightly too liberal for the times and Nixon triumphs with a wafer thin majority, with an aspiring actor, Ronald Reagan as his Vice-Presidential candidate. Under Nixon America prospers, he is riding on the high that the two Kennedys created and America is in a great boom period. He successfully campaigns for re-election in 1976 against the weak Democratic candidate of Jimmy Carter, running with Mondale as his vice president. The election is a landslide. Ted Kennedy, decided that this was not the year to challenge Nixon who appeared very strong in all the polls and had a very high approval rating.

In 1980, again Ted Kennedy thinks it is not the right time to challenge as Reagan is riding high from Nixon's successful presidency, Walter Mondale is chosen as the Democratic candidate with Edmund Brown of California. Reagan triumphs with a heavy victory that leaves only D.C., Massachusetts and Minnesota going to Mondale. Mondale is humiliated and retires from politics later that year. Reagan serves 4 years as President, still America is prospering. In 1983, the Soviet Bloc crumbles after 8 years of brilliant foreign policy under John Kennedy, a further 4 under Robert, followed by 8 years under Nixon and 3 under Reagan.

Reagan's popularity soars, he is seen as the hero of the hour even if the crumble was in part owing to his equally good predecessors. American politics is thriving, without Watergate, the public are in full support of politicians and are not disenfranchised. In 1984 Reagan triumphs over George McGovern. Tragically, only 1 year into his second term, Reagan is assassinated by a crazed Soviet supporter who then takes his own life. George Bush Sr takes over as President in 1985 with the country still in a high, America is the only superpower left in the world at the present. However, Bush gets involved in a dispute with middle-Eastern countries starting a war with Iraq and several surrounding countries, the war is a short one but a brutal one costing many American lives, for the first time in many many years the President's approval rating falls below 55%. In 1988 Ted Kennedy sees his chance for Presidency and runs to become the Democratic candidate. His brother John, weakened greatly by his collitis and Addison's disease along with his many back problems throws himself in behind his younger brother Edward, making speeches for him and campaigning hard to win him the Democratic nomination. Unfortunately, while campaigning in Wisconsin for his younger brother, Former President John Kennedy dies from his many health problems, his death is greatly mourned and he is remembered as one of the best president's of the 20th century, along with Reagan and FDR. Riding on the sympathy votes, Edward Kennedy scrapes the nomination just ahead of Michael Dukakis who is also seen as "unelectable". Edward Kennedy chooses the young governor of Arkansas William Clinton (a.k.a Bill Clinton) as his VP candidate. Kennedy triumphs over the incumbent George Bush who lost support after a war in the middle East that cost America dearly.

Under Edward Kennedy, America sees 4 years of great peace and prosperity, the like that had been seen during the 60s and 70s, he is very popular with the people and wins a second term in 1992. Throughout his time as President, America grows economically and another boom seems to be starting after a slump during the war in the middle East.

Riding on this high, Bill Clinton, the Vice-President gets the nomination over Al Gore who he takes as his Vice-Presidential candidate, a surprise choice as they are both from the South. Bill Clinton runs in 1996 against former Vice-President Dan Quayle (chosen by Bush after Reagan's assassination).

Clinton triumphs in a landslide as Quayle is too greatly associated with Bush Sr. The next 4 years see Clinton as President, continuing the economic growth that Edward Kennedy started, although at a slower rate than under Ted. In 2000, Clinton, the incumbent President scrapes a wafer-thin victory over George W. Bush after a sex scandal hurt Clinton's formerly high approval ratings. The next year is dogged by sex-scandals, and only 6 months into his second term Clinton resigns after it is alleged that there is the possibility of an impeachment.

Al Gore, his Vice-President now takes office. September 11th hits and the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Centre are hit, however neither the Pentagon nor the White House is hit. Outraged at this attack on their people, American's call for war on whoever did this. Gore reluctantly takes the decision to move in on Afghanistan and attack the Taliban, the operation is regarded as only semi-successful, the Taliban are removed from Afghanistan, but very few of its members are apprehended. US citizens call for an all out war on terror and for the hunt down and capture of those responsible for 9/11, Gore is unsure, he doesn't want to jeopardise his relations with other countries, he falters and a second attack on America is made, this time they aim for the Pentagon. Half of the pentagon is destroyed owing to the failure of the Gore administration, Gore steps down as President, leaving his Vice-President, John Kerry, a former senator of Massachusetts in charge. It is now 2003. Kerry fumbles his way through the rest of the term, taking more action against terrorism but not as much as is needed and is defeated, along with his Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman by John McCain, the Republican candidate with his vice-Presidential choice of George W. Bush who had previously run for President.

if you are referring to my labelling it like 1960-1968, i mean that it ends just before 1968, that is how they write those things....

terms ends 1/20

ie clinton was prez 1993-2001

in fact probably, i reckon they would have stayed together and maybe had another kid or two, John Jr possibly wouldn't have died and may have got into politics because of his father, if so, i would have him running 2008 or 2012, who knows, maybe even 2016

getting a bit ahead of ourselves aren't we? Wink

besides, in real life, wouldn't happen, the reign of Kennedy's is over now, Ted is the last of them and I reckon George W. Bush is the last of the Bushes really, Jeb won't make it and I don't see any future President Bush.....
