Now, therefore, I, Gerald Rudolph Ford, President of the United States of America, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from July 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974.

Why was the pardon from July 20, 1969 when Nixon took office in January?

Not even the great Nixon can figure out how to run the White House well enough to commit a crime inside of six months!  Takes a while to get a posse organized!

I wonder what crime one would attempt on the day of the Moon Landing?   Hmmmm......

My understanding is that the pardon was effective from January 20, 1969.  I think the July 20 date is a mistake.
