I am disappointed to learn that the President lost. He has not served us for long, but served us well, and was the guiding light through the controversies of the government's earliest days. I congratulate Gustaf, and his vice president Supersoulty, both well-liked pragmatists. I'm sure we can work well with them.

I announce today my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President. I am running today for one main reason. I am running to return my party to the progressive values that have defended the freedom and well-being of people for many years. I intend to introduce a platform that dramatically redefines the structure of government, based upon the objectives of meeting the material needs of all citizens and defending social freedom.

I will make it a commitment to expand the concept of social insurance in our nation, and I wil never stray from that to be fashionable. I intend to introduce a national program of health insurance , nationalize all industires fundamental to the health, safety, and welfare of our people, and make sure that a good stewardship of the poor will never be forgotten in the rush to find a bogeyman.

I further intend to protect social and civil liberties. I will defend the right to make private reproductive decisions against all foes, and those who value the temporary gains among the most dogmatic members of the electorate against the ineluctable trend toward greater freedom. I will not compromise the integrity of equality for all those who want marriage in favor of the false promise of civil unions, another paean to those who wish to make their faith the law. I will support affirmative action resolutely, and will continue to move towards the end of racism by actually considering the deciding factor, race. I will support the equality of all, and pledge to maintain their civil rights.

I hope to be president four months from now, but even if I fall short, I hope more greatly to inform and alert everyone to the struggles that are occuring, because they cry out for justice. So, let's not dawdle, let's fight for the future and fairness.

Now I understand why you reregistered as a Democrat.
Has a Chief Justice ever run for the Presidency in the US of America?

When is the next Presidential election?

4 months time, we just had one.

The United Atlas Centrist ticket of Gustaf/Supersoulty won.

Charles Evans Hughes and William Howard Taft ran, but they weren't Chief Justices at that time.

Hughes was an associate justice when he ran in 1916.

It would have been Taft in 1952 I think. It could have been Warren, he was the most like Eisenhower.

I think it's a bit early to think about this now.  Wait until late August at the earliest to start thinking about the next presidential election.

I get the sense that a "darft Harry" movement may begin to emerge soon... you could be a very strong candidate Smiley

He might just do it.  The UL loonies can't wait for their asses to be handed to them.

This is an interesting move by Migrendal, athough regrettable from the UL standpoint.  He must think he has a better chance of winning the UL endorsement running as a Democrat than of winning the Democrat's endorsement running as a United Leftist.  He's probably right...although it remains to be seen whether the Dems will accept him.

But I don't understand why he's announcing so early.

I guess Boss Tweed's and Ben's statements mean I received the moderate auto-da-fe. Well, I guess it's going to be a fight.

Good luck with your run.  If your record is any guide, you will be a principled advocate for your ideas and you will stick to the issues.

Actually I think announcing early works to Migrendel advantage.  He doesn't enjoy the personal popularity of some of the other members of his party like Al or Harry and his natural constituency (the UL) is less solid than, say, Harry's natural constituency of moderate democrats.  By announcing early Migrendel may just scare some of the potential rivals away while giving primary voters ample time to get to know Migrendel and his policies.  It can only work to his favor as far as I see.

Well where you expecting mine (even though I'm not a democrat on this board) or Tweed's endorsement, I'd say that you probably have a surprisingly good chance with the UL as a base, thanks to so many moderates having left for the UAC... well we will see.

Well, good luck Migrendel. It will be interesting to see whether the UL will now announce a candidate or back Migrendel in the Democratic primaries. The Democratic party is kind of hard to define by now. 12 democrats voted in the last election, but only a few of those are active in fantasy politics, most of them have only registered and voted. So it's kind of hard to gauge support for primary candidates right now, I'd say.

I don't know the exact figures, but didn't we get more than 12 voters from our party? I had a total of 29 votes, counting preferences. 2 of those were Republicans, but the UL doesn't have THAT many members I don't think...

Maybe I'm mistaken, I dunno.
