By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Republican National Committee acknowledged this week that it distributed campaign literature in West Virginia and Arkansas warning voters that liberals want to ban the Bible.

When reporters asked about the mailings on Sept. 17, RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie said he wasn't aware of the material and did not confirm that it was distributed by the GOP. However, Gillespie said it "could be the work" of the party.

Contacted Friday by The Associated Press, party spokeswoman Christine Iverson said the GOP had already acknowledged it was the source of the mass mailings.

The literature claims that "the liberal agenda includes removing 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance" and shows a Bible with the word "BANNED" across it. It also shows a photo of a man, on his knees, placing a ring on the hand of another man with the word "ALLOWED," a reference to same-sex marriage.

The mailing tells people to "vote Republican to protect our families" and defeat the "liberal agenda."

Actually, it's 50% true.

They want to pass "hate speech" laws that would be contrary to the Bible, ban certain kinds of preaching, and in theory, would require the Bible to be made politically correct.

It's a serious movement inside the party. They consider it protecting gay people (plus other alternative lifestyles) and their "civil rights." Sexism, anti-gay, you name it.

I'm always amazed at how much some conservatives seem to know about liberals!  I mean, if you had asked me, I would have said that I, as a liberal, wasn't in favor of passing hate speech laws that would result in the Bible being banned, but you know, I guess I had myself wrong all along.

How do the actions of individual Democrats (also, note that "liberal" =/= "Democrat") say anything about Democrats as a whole?

Your attempts at establishing strict homogeneity among Democrats and liberals are wearing thin.  Read this and try again.

And people called the Birmingham Hodge Hill by-election dirty...

Did you all know that in the U.K that sort of stuff is illegal?
The U.S needs tougher libel laws.

Do "50%" and "true" have... er... special... meanings to you?

Blair is a Christian. Labour doesn't show nearly the sort of animosity towards Christianity that the American Democrats do.

As for the Lib Dems...

Some of the Bible can be interpreted into hate speech.

No, we don't want to ban it, but get it out of my face.

I'm a Christian but a socially moderate Democrat (well at least I would be!)

I did not mean that libs can't be Christians. I just meant that Christians tend to be more right-wing, sorry. Smiley

So you're saying ban it from public places only or what?

Republicans want to rape your daughters.

Oh wait ... are the Republicans offended by that?  Well, imagine how we feel when you lie about us.

We all know the DNC is the anti-Christian party of the two. A third of them would gladly take "under God" out of the pledge and make it illegal to try to convert homosexuals in public.
