I don't consider my views too liberal, the American standard does.  "Ultra" and "too" makes it sound like my views are over the top, which I don't think at all.

I am ultra-liberal on economic issues, such as taxation, welfare, minimum wage, education, and health care.

I am merely mainstream-liberal on most social issues.

You know what Boss, you're right, but the fact is that people like BetterRedThanDead were allowed to hijack the Liberal movement back in the 1960's and decent Liberals never really were able to distance themselves from the extremists. Hence, the Democrats have to run away from the Liberal tag, while Republicans openly call themselves Conservatives.

I think it started to change after Goldwater.

Indeed it did...and not all that long ago. The 1980's changed all of that.

Not exactly. Goldwater laid the foundation and made people start to question Liberal dogma, but "liberal" did not become a 4-letter word until the 1980's.

I was talking about the idea of Republicans running away from the title conservative. After Goldwater, many felt that they no longer had to do so.

John, actually if that's what you meant, then I totally agree with you. It definitely started with Goldwater. In fact, we are now talking about the subject of my Senior Thesis in college. I examined the Conservative movement from 1964 to 1980 and explained why Goldwater laid the foundation for Reagan's later success and why one was successful and the other wasn't. Went into great detail on the socioeconomic and cultural changes that led to the Reagan Revolution.

and if Goldwater were alive today, most conservatives would hate him! Need I remind you what he said about Jerry Falwell?

Yeah, that's great to bring up stuff Goldwater said when he was 90-something years old and clearly senile...or worse. Unlike Reagan, Goldwater didn't have a wife as wonderful as Nancy to hide him when dementia set in. That meant that his erratic and somewhat incoherent ramblings could be exploited by left wing vermin quick to score political points over his carcass.

Yes, that's what I ws aiming at. I'm glad Goldwater came along when he did. I think that brought Reagan on when we needed him the most.

John,

Yep, that was essentially the theme of my Thesis, that without Goldwater, you could not have had Reagan 16 years later.

Goldwater was 74 when he made that comment. It was in 1981, in reference to Falwell's opposition to Sandra Day O'Connor's confirmation to the Supreme Court.

He's in his 90's now. I believe that's what Mark meant.

I think that title suits me just fine and dandy.

Ultra-liberal.  I wrap myself in that banner and wave my flag high!  The country is falling in line behind the superiority of our ideas.
