Citizens Against Nym has released a new broadcast ad to highlight the extreme nature of the new Democrat Party Platform as proposed by President Nyman.

You can download the ad in either of two different formats below.

Platform/Death Penalty (30 secs)

http://stuff.donjohnson.org/atlas/nymdeathpenalty.rm (RealVideo - 293k)

http://stuff.donjohnson.org/atlas/nymdeathpenalty.wmv (Windows Media - 591k)

And finally, this is meant in good fun, just trying to stir some emotions like a real campaign ad.

Ha!  I love it!

I don't agree with the sentiments, though Smiley  It just makes me like Nym more Tongue

Are you going to make pro-mystery-person ads soon?

And how about anti-Reaganfan ads?

We need to be fair and attack everyone Wink

Did you read my criticism of the Democratic platform on the thread that they posted that draft on?  My sentiment was exactly that in your ad, great job.

In response to this ad, I would say that justice should not be equated with vengenance. I feel that as a matter of principle, we should not stoop to the level of murderers. Killing is the problem, and more killing isn't the solution. I feel that lifetime imprisonment without the possibility of parole is actually, in many cases, a far greater punishment than death. Also, I would say that giving someone who may deserve death "only" life in prison is far less of a travesty than murdering an innocent person.

That being said, the revised platform does have a slightly different position on this issue, which I encourage you to review. The above statements are my own personal position, not necessarily those of the party as a whole.

What is the monetary cost of an innocent person's death at the hands of the government?

I don't understand your logic.  First you assail the death penalty on the grounds that it's too equated with vengeance, then you say you favor life in prison without the chance of parole because it's a more cruel punishment.

In some cases, it may be a stiffer penalty. One could consider a life in which one has no hope of ever obtaining freedom (barring of course revealations of proof that the person is innocent) as a fate worse than death. Vengeance does not equate to cruelty, however. I understand that "an eye for an eye" is a natural instinctual response in all of us, but I do not feel that mimicing the killers and continuing the cycle by promoting a culture of violence through government-sanctioned killing is the answer. I feel that justice is best served not by following our natural vengeful instincts, but rather by giving the person life in prison instead.

Actually, it costs more to kill someone then to put them in for life in prison.
