I was just thinking about how the United Kingdom's police force's "bobbies", don't usually carry firearms...do you think it is better this way?

They do have Armour Response Vehicles (ARV's) that are always on call to bring in weapons immediately if the need arises.  If a bobbie ever runs into more than he or she can handle

If an officer of the law is not trusted to carry a weapon, then they should not be a police officer.  I would never be an unarmed cop.

Well, I'll have mine.  So if a cop expects to stop me he better have his.  Or a flamethrower.  Or a grenade launcher.  What they should NOT do is engage in high-speed freeway chases.  Or hassle people for minor crimes like burning weed and public nudity and such.  But you're damn right they ought to be packing the heat if they aim to serve and protect.  (or even to intimidate and brutalize, because that big stick is only so scary, without a gun to back it up.)

An unarmed cop would have a very short life expectancy in this society, I'd imagine.
