Schinderler's List was pretty good, and Rocky is a classic, but my vote has to go to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

As of more recent films, Gangs of New York is a masterpiece.

I can't pick any specific All-American movie, but here are some I like.

Savior was good, The Pianist was good, The Passion was good, Gattaca, Frequency, X2, Rear Window (w/ Jimmy Stewart), I Confess (W/ Clift Montgomery), most other Alfred Hitchcock movies (I still say they should remake them), with any exceptions including Psycho which was, to be blunt, dumb... that's all I can think of.

Good movies but by 'all american film' I more meant films that reflect American values and the American expirience.  ie It's a Wonderful Life, Rocky, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, To Kill a Mocking Bird, 1776.  Films like those.

Birth of a Nation Smiley. Only joking.

My pick would have to be Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But for all American movies you can not beat a western. True Grit, Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Casablanca

Struggle against impossible odds ... self-sacrifice ... love ... honor.  The Bogart character, Rick, IS America.

I don't know whether the 'Trondheim-definition', i.e. it has to be made without foreign influence, still holds. That could certainly disqualify Casablanca since Ingrid Bergman is from Sweden...(OK, sorry, back to topic...)

I suppose one could make an argument of sorts for 'American History X'. But what the heck, why not 'Wag the Dog', if we're gonna be mean and disillusioned. Or 'Full Metal Jacket'...have we mentioned 'How the West Was Won'?

"The Subject was Roses". If you havent seen it it's awesome. I highly recommend you check it out. You get to see a YOUNG Martin Sheen. It's about a World War 2 vet and his dysfunctional family.

"Birth of a Nation", all the politics aside this movie created the basis for how ALL modern movies are filmed. I have watched it several times and for 1915 the Special effects are awesome.

'N I would've thought an all-American movie is one made without any outside financing...
Anybody know "Buffalo '66"? Would that qualify?

I liked that one.

I agree, all these were great Americans films. Rocky was also good. Casablanca was good but is a tad overrated...

Ahh. 1776, by far. I love that.

If you fast forward through the slow parts it's pretty good.
