"No, I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God.… I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists. "

I like this quote!

wow, this quote plus all the quotes under "Apologizing for America" makes me like Bush 41  more!

Sad

I'd just ignore statements like that if I were you.  Wink

Well, if he had actually done that we probably wouldn't be in the mess we're at now. At least then he would have had more of a moral authority to take out Saddam. Though I still think GW Bush was 100% justified.

Jews don't count, sorry. This is one nation under Jesus.

Though I still think GW Bush was 100% justified.

Of course you do.

Ooh, my HP vote tied it up. Perot>Clinton>Bush>Dukakis.

Look, Bush sucked. Yes, he provided good foreign policy but domestically, he was one of the worst presidents of the century, along with Carter and Wilson and FDR. He is far from the level of Reagan, Clinton, or even GWB.

One of the things you learn as a journalist is to verify.  When President Bush was accused of saying that Atheists are not worthy to be citizens, I was shocked and infuriated.

Every effort I made to validate this was fruitless.  It doesn't mean he didn't say it.  It only means that the only "proof" we have that he said it is a claim by an activist in the Atheist movement who claims to have interviewed him.

Has there been any verification of this?

I hate and detest that mentality.  And it is quite typical among conservatives of a Theistic bent.  So perhaps H.W. does believe it.  But I would like to see some proof.

This is just like the allegation that Sarah Palin referred to Barack Obama as "sambo".  I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to discover that she is a viscious racist.  Unfortunately, the claim that she called him that has never been substantiated.

He was okay as President, and the only thing that prevented him from reelection was that almost timed economic slump. That would also have been the better time to go into Iraq, since we had justification, moral support, and a much larger force available. The latter invasion I blame on the influence of Cheney and Rumsfeld.
