It served its purpose, and might be needed again if Russia continues on its current path, but its efforts to reinvent itself since the Cold War have been laughable at best.

Rather outdated as the fear of the Soviet Union was the glue that held it together.  But the more world powers that are officially aligned, the better, as it would appear to reduce the odds of war.   Countries like the Ukraine and Georgia attempt to become more economically and socially liberal [classical], in an attempt to join it too.  Worst case scenario is that it does nothing, as far as I can tell.  The US would have still invaded the countries it has been invading even without NATO support.

I echo the other posters; it was extremely important for a time but it has now lost much of its relevance.

The more interesting question to me is: what are the odds that it one day becomes a "league of democracies", or, "league of freedom", or stuffs like this, burying both NATO and UN. I would say 80%.

I think it still can serve the same purpose, with the War on Terror replacing the Cold War.

You can't really wage a war against an abstract concept.
