Are there limits to freedom of speech?  (I understand the laws in the UK are not as "open" as the US is when it comes to this particular freedom)  Of course you can't shout "fire" in a crowded theatre so yes, there is a line.  Do video games about rape cross that line?  What about movies about rape?  Books?

I would particularly hope not. These types of media should be allowed to be imported and sold, if people are wanting to buy them. I despise the conditional outlook these "decency" minded people have towards anything questionable.

If no real person has had their rights violated or has been exploited unlawfully, then I don't see any need for a ban just because some people are offended by it.

Stereotype much? Gotta love that the PC crowd has so many double standards.

While the video game is disgusting, it is not as disgusting as the attempts of these people to ban it.

Without the controversy, this game would have sold a few thousand copies at most.

With the controversy, this game has the potential to sell much more than that.

Censorship attempts generally lead to better sales for the item attempting to be censured.  Well played, morons.

Quoted for truth.

If would-be censors really wanted to keep objectionable material out of people's hands, they wouldn't demagogue obscure media.

I heard last night that Japan is now attempting (or, perhaps, has otherwise succeeded—I didn't hear the news in full to gain a complete understanding) to ban all games involving rape. Which, so far as I've heard, is a recurrent theme in a lot of the weird anime-based gentlemen's games over there.

Married...With Children probably would've been cancelled after the first or second season if it wasn't for a public boycott campaign against it and its advertisers. Thanks to that it became one of FOX's top-rated shows, a staple of 90s culture, and a show that will live on in syndication forever instead of being forgotten.

Andrew "Dice" Clay is a very rich man thanks to conservatives overreacting(sp?).

There's been no ban, nor any serious attempts to ban it, as far as I know. There was a false report by TBS that an industry standards group in Japan (meaning it wasn't the government) had decided they would "ban" such games, though again the report was a false one.

If you care to follow game issues like this go to www.gamepolitics.com - they've been covering this particular topic as well.

A Japanese computer game in which players rape women and girls, impregnate them and then force them to get abortions.
LOL!
I haven't seen the game, obviously, so I may be off here, but that sounds more like bad taste humour than rape porn (which is disgusting).

um... movies about rape and books about rape should stay legal. But video games have long lasting effects on kids. This game is disgusting ,immoral, and unbelievably rude. This game should be heavily restricted or banned. I'd most likely go with restricted ,but banning it would work too.

Why would a pixelated video game have longer lasting effects on a kid than a very very real looking movie would?  And who cares about kids, kids shouldn't have access to it.  Are we to ban everything kids shouldn't have access to?

Kids are irrelevant if "offensive" games are already denied to them. It's the perfect red herring.

1. You are basing this on what exactly? Do you have any scientific evidence, or are you just making that up? I'll let you know now that most of the studies show very little long term effects on real world behavior due to video games - in fact the effect is pretty much the same level as movies and whatnot.
2. If any kid is playing a game like this, it's a parenting failure.  This isn't exactly a game you can get by going down to your local games store. I doubt many kids are playing it anyways - this is a game aimed at adults.

That is harsh. I think if you are gonna play video games you should be able to separate a game from your life. If you can't then it crosses the line.

Dude, for a year I started thinking "Grand Theft Auto" was how life was supposed to be. Kids are easily brainwashed by games.

If that happened, you were probably not mature enough to play to ''Grand Theft Auto''.

On the rape game, that game is disgusting, that is oblivious. People who play to this game and enjoy it are clearly dangerous. But I prefer them playing to this game than being in our streets, raping people. Perhaps putting people who buy this game in a database should be a good idea.

While I don't believe in censorship, banning this game is a lot less wrong than most cases of censorship (i.e. flag burning, sex education, artwork, etc.).
