I just saw it on CNN. No article yet.

Looks like I'll have a chance to buy one of those lovely little European cars in a few years.  Wink

Why would Fiat buy now and not in 30 days when they could get a much better deal?

I hope I get to see you get stuck in the snow.  Wink  I'd laugh pretty hard.

Then again...people here tend to buy their cars/trucks based on the one or two times they will actually need it for something heavy duty... instead of just buying the car they need 99% of the time and borrowing or renting for that other 1%.

Ya, the WSJ said the administration told Chrysler it would shut it down in 30 days if it didn't collapse into Fiat. It's assets are worth so little, that it needed to lose almost all of its debt to have any prospect of viability. The WSJ said the administration task force has also concluded that GM needs to lose a fair portion of its debt, and that its creditors need to take a big haircut.

Fiat is a crappy company that has been in terrible shape for years.  Simply put, the idea that you can combine crap with crap and come out with something good is ludicrous, imo.

The feels more like a way to funnel $6 billion to Italy, if anything else.

I think I remember reading in the Economist a few months ago that Fiat had turned a corner and is much better managed and viable as a company than its reputation would have it.

uh, why would anyone want to buy Chrysler, even if it were free?  Will it start becoming profitable after purchase?

Chrysler has some potential to make money if it loses most or all of its debt and disadvantageous contracts (pensions, medical, etc), including slashing wages about another 15 bucks per hour.

The WSJ today says the plan is to just sell of Fiat some of the "good" assets (aka the "good Chrysler" in exchange for Fiat continuing to manufacture cars in the US. So Fiat is hardly taking on Chrysler more major problems.
