Turns out they didn't need 40,000 (or whatever stupidly large number they made up) acres per breeding pair like the hippies were trying to say.  The California Spotted Owl is not considered threatened nor endangered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, but the State of Cali and US Forrest Service consider it a "species of special concern".
