...and how it gives us a glimpse into the adults of tomorrow. And is a kick in the guts of racists.

Primary Education

Pupils by ethnicity

White UK 93.08%
White Other 2.17%
Asian Pakistani 1.27%
Mixed 0.92%
Asian Indian 0.42%
Black African 0.42%
Asian Chinese 0.32%

Scotland is relatively homogenous. The Black-African figure is interesting; this is due to asylum/immigration and very recent too. By contrast 'Black-Carribean' registers just 0.2%

However looking at the Primary 1 and Primary 2 intake (those aged 4-6) White-British accounts for just 84.93% Compared to a Primary 7 figure (the last year of primary education) of 92.79%

National Identity

71.96 of White-UK consider themselves to be Scottish. This doesn't mean the others aren't - they may view their national identity as British (and be 'Scottish' born) and others may be Welsh, English etc. National identity is somewhat more fluid amongst non-white pupils. Asian-Pakistani break down as 31.9% Scottish and 46.27% British. In all (and including those who identify as Irish, Welsh, English etc) 79.46% come under the umbarella of British

So much for tribalism....

Amongst other established minorities;

Asian-Chinese 70.5% British
Asian-Indian 41.84% British

Amongst Black-Africans (relatively recent arrivals) the figure is just 18.58%

Language

The top 'main home language' in schools is of course English. Second is Polish which has overtaken Punjabi, followed by Urdu, Cantonese, Arabic and French. Following French in the table is Gaelic....

Religion

Scotland has a state school system containing 'Non denominational. 'Catholic' and a few other state schools. In 1997, 17.38% of Scottish state school pupils attended Catholic state schools (this does not mean that the pupils themselves are Catholic). In 2008 the figure was 17.34%...so has remained stable. For the record taking private schools into the figure would not alter it by much - there is only one (I went there Grin)

Secondary Education (ages 11/12 to 16/17/18)

In Catholic state schools - 17.08%
% White - British in Secondary 1 93.06%
% White - British in Secondary 4 (the last compulsory year) 93.17%

More soon.
