A Democrat will win AL before a Republican wins RI.  It'll be a long time beofre the GOP wins RI, but the right Democrat in the right climate could win AL.

Obviously, either would take a 40+ state landslide. No way to determine which party will acheive that sooner.

Republican in Rhode Island if they were Catholic and moderate, or a Democrat in Alabama who was conservative and running against a Catholic

I think Republicans would win Rhode Island if it was like Giuliani v. Brad Henry, and the Dems would win Alabama if it was Jindal v. Brad Henry

I think a Giuliani vs. Dodd, in which Dodd has a massive fall after his countrywide scandal, could win.

Rhode Island is an interesting state regarding how it would go. It has a majority of catholics, which actually makes it less of a "Catholic" state. By that I mean that in states with strong catholic MINORITIES (like Louisiana and the rust belt), Catholics tend to rally around the tenants of the church, such as pro-life and anti-gay marriage. But in a state like Rhode Island, being catholic is not something that people feel the need to rally around (the same goes for Massachusetts for the most part). The economy is the biggest issue there for many, so it helps to be a "blue-collar democrat", like Jim Langevin or Jack Reed. Then again there are a lot of suburban voters who will support someone like Carcieri or Chafee (until 2006 due to Bush and the war). Alabama on the other hand is simply very socially conservative (we tend to forget that Wallace was pro-labor and pro-govt. programs) and could go for a southern conservative Dem.

Option 2 easily.  The Republicans are a dying breed in New England, let alone in any position to win anything.  The Democrats are stronger in Dixie than the Republicans are in RI.  In many southern states, the state Democratic party is actually quite strong, and given the right environment and the right candidate can break through to the federal level, as well.  The Republicans in the Northeast are a hopeless case.

Didn't Alabama solidly reject a referendum for increased government funding for education, that was even supported by the Republican Governor?

Alabama whites opposed it for rational, totally nonbigoted reasons: "[Riley is] trying to get a massive turnout of black voters to pass a tax increase so he can raise taxes on Republican constituents"- Alabama GOP Chairman Marty Connors.

In my opinion the survival of the Republican Party is in question. The Republican Party has been increasingly associated with not only economic failure (the GOP did not die as the result of the Great Depression) but also with an attempt to establish dictatorial government and with pervasive corruption. That infamous triad will be remembered for a couple of decades.

Neither is remotely likely, but the Dems have a better chance of winning Alabama.  Rudy wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning Rhode Island.    Chaffe is much more liberal than Giuliani and lost because of Iraq even though he was strongly against it.  Even if Iraq winds up never being an issue ever again Giuliani being uber neo-conservative wouldn't have a chance.

Replace Giuliani with Snowe or Chaffee and you'd be right.
