Which candidate will promise to push for a constitutional convention (does California have those?) to rewrite the constitution and make it less terrible? I endorse that one.

the anti-establishment one that doesn't exist,

Honestly the most likely person might be some Republican like Tom Campbell.  The dude unilaterally found my non-existent twitter feed and started acting like a creeper, he probably can do anything

Is amending the constitution really that far out there of a policy position? It should be pretty obvious to these people that it's broken and has made the state functionally ungovernable.

I don't know.  I think it's been pretty obvious that we need reform ever since Prop 13 passed and it has yet to come about 30 years ago.  Why is this year any different?

Should we essentially write off the Republican?

Should we essentially write off the Republican?

they're acting seriously enough that it would be foolish to do so.  I mean, if Republicans can win in Vermont, Rhode Island, NYC, and Connecticut and Democrats can win in Oklahoma, Wyoming and Kansas, something can happen in California

If Brown is the nominee, then yes. In fewer words, yes.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom on Saturday took a swipe at potential rival Jerry Brown, telling party delegates he represents the future and not just "a stroll down memory lane."

The San Francisco mayor was greeted by thunderous applause as he addressed delegates at the state Democratic Party convention in Sacramento.

After announcing his candidacy this week, Newsom made his pitch to the party faithful by casting himself as the candidate of tomorrow.

"Will we offer Californians a stroll down memory lane?" he said. "Will we embrace the past, or will we embrace the future?"

Sigh... it's gonna be a long year. My boyfriend and his dad are already devout Newsom supporters.

Whitman has enough money to self-finance so there's no reason to count her out. Even though, if Brown is the nominee, I expect him to win 56-43(or thereabouts).

Basically. Brown has support in the Central Valley (for historical rather than ideological reasons, but Meg Whitman is hardly the sort of candidate to win those voters back). Without big margins in the Central Valley, the Republicans can't pass 40%. It's just that simple.

His interview tonight with Maddow is 20 minutes into program.

Newsom reminds of my mistakes that I make when giving presentations or engaging in debates.  He tries to make a dozen dozen points instead of communicating concrete ideas.

Newsom gets my endorsement.  Most moderate candidate in the race.

Does that matter if he's perceived as the most radical?  His playboy personality is most certainly not moderate either.

Well I also quite like his campaign style and gay rights views.  I am not quite up to date on CA politics.  What do you mean playboy personality?

uh... wikipedia his personal affairs, sleeping with his best friend's wife, dating underage actresses and buying them alcohol, being used as the focal point & bogeyman for the Yes on Prop 8 campaign....

I only fault him for the first item on the list.  He's unapologetically a gay-rights activist and I applaud him for it, but is he necessarily the best person to let California get past its budget deadlock that requires obscene majorities to pass basic bills?

Loretta Sanchcez is pondering, but I imagine that both she and Villaraigosa won't run.  Brown may have used to be a moderate but he's grandstanding on liberal issues in order to make headlines, I don't know where he stands anymore.

Newsom may be the most moderate candidate in the race but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be able to get the Republicans in the legislature on board... hell Arnold is a Republican moderate and can't do it.  With Newsom as a gay-rights bogeyman, his image, and San Francisco stigmatized as radically liberal..we'll see, but California tends to deadlock.  I don't know if anyone running on either side of the race is really capable of creating a coalition able to pass a non-controversial, basic budget.
