Obama/Biden received 255,459 votes in Delaware on November 4th. Senate candidate Joe Biden received 257,539. This means that, at minimum, 2,000 Delaware voters voted the McCain/Palin ticket for President and Joe Biden for Senate. At least 2,000 people voted for and against the same man on the same ballot.

Who are these people?

No, they voted against Obama for President, but voted for Biden for the Senate.

Who says that's how it went? They may have not voted for president, voted for someone besides McCain, or maybe some of the people who voted for Obama didn't vote for Biden or anyone.

Some of the people who voted for Biden for Senate but not for President might have simply refused to vote for someone they perceived as a joke opponent for Senate, or just have voted in the only logical way if they wanted to keep their Senator.

It's also possible that maybe some of those 20,000 Biden voters, did not vote for president at all.

Perhaps some of them thought he would be a better Senator than VP.

As an aside, any hypotheses how Durbin ran 6% ahead of Obama in Illinois?

Same thing happened much more strongly in 2000 in Connecticut; Lieberman ran quite a bit ahead of Gore.

In Texas in 1988, Bentsen won reelection to the Senate while simultaneously losing the state in his VP run.

There are a lot of pro-incumbent voters who don't even consider the incumbent unless there is a great reason to - there wasn't in either race.
