Please, any fellow Calvinists do not take offense that I put Calvin there. He actually did rule a theocracy in Geneve.
I'm a Calvinist/reformed myself, so please, don't go over the top with it.

The Kaiser

It's hard to look at people like Pope Alexander VI and not sympathize with the reformation.

Ghengis Khan. His reputation and his success really get to people, somehow. The Mongols weren't any bloodier than any of a hundred different peoples in the world back then (Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula lived two centuries later, and certainly HE was bloody), and they believed in freedom of religion. They also had one of the smallest standing armies of the nations of the time: Mongol horsemen were just much more effective fighters, especially on open plains.

Khan - he had the biggest empire in history. Too bad it collapsed every time the Mongol leader died, lol.

I object to your calling all Popes before 1815 "Tyrants"

And I object to the usage of the word "tyrant" to describe any legit pontif

It's gotta be Kahn I mean he was great character in Star Tre.... Oh wait we're not talking about that Kahn?

Seriously though out of this list Ganghis Kahn was certainly the most successful.

I also found that slightly troubling.

More than a couple of legit popes could be described as tyrants, Leo X being another obvious example. The handfull of popes leading up to the Protestant Reformation were not great guys. Things became much better after the Counter-Reformation. And this is coming from a future priest, so I'm not trying to bash the church in any way.

I'm not calling all Popes before 1815 tyrants. I'm saying some of them were, but since I could not fit all them in the poll, I use that option and ask to specify, something the one person who chose that option didn't do.

Ivan the Terrible, of course... though "terrible" has a more similar meaning to "awesome". He was a good leader, I think, just a little crazy. Also, King Vlad of Wallachia (Dracula) was a good leader too, and I think he was made a saint.

The Shah!

He forcibly reduced the influence of religion in his society - there is no better thing a tyrant can accomplish.  If only he hadn't lost power, Islam might've been beaten back in Iran.  Someday we're going to need someone like him here, I fear.

Khan.  Can't beat a man who only stopped killing people because he realized that if he killed them he couldn't collect taxes from them.

Hands down: Khan!
I think I had decided before I read the whole list.

Reasoning: If he hadn't died you'd prpbably be a Mongol too. Think about it....
