If this has been done before, oh well - suck it up!

Predict the dates that Barack Obama and John McCain announce their running mates.

Obama: I really think it is going to be this week. My guess is to prevent coverage of the Olympics from overshadowing his selection though Obama's selection will get massive coverage no matter what.

McCain: 29 August 08 - The day after the Democratic National Convention in order to prevent a huge post-convention bounce for Obama. Doubt it will work though.

What do you say?

I'm in agreement about August 29th for McCain.

Obama I see as having two choices: Thursday the 7th or the Monday night of the Convention (the 25th), with the VP giving his speech Wednesday.  He probably won't announce during the Olympics, and announcing at the beginning of the Convention will draw a bigger audience for the VP's introduction to the country on Wednesday night.

No Democratic VP since Mondale '76 has been announced at the Convention itself...understandably, since, for such staged events, it would be hard to both keep it under wraps long enough & have a long enough prep time for the convention.

For Obama, I have a hunch that agrees with CNN about Wednesday or Thursday, August 20 or 21 nearing the end of the Olympics.  He does want to squash the coverage of the Olympics and prevent it from overshadowing his campaign trail.

For McCain, I think it will either be Friday, August 29 or Monday, September 1 at the convention itself.

Obama - sometime this week
McCain - a day after

When there's three days in between conventions - there's no need to use the VP pick to mitigate convention bounce.  Before the two-week Olympics, otoh, perfect.

Unless Obama does pick Evan Bayh on Wednesday (which could happen, but I doubt it), there wouldn't be a good time for McCain to pick.  Friday would put him against the opening ceremonies (President Bush and Hu Jintao!  Together!  In China!  Look!).

Obama- Hopefully he'll get it over this week, although I hope the whole Bayh thing is a red herring.

McCain - Well the latest "buzz" is that he's not going to announce until after the D's convention. Sheesh. I guess around August 29th would make sense then.

Some have speculated McCain will announce on September 2, the 2nd day of the convention. President Bush is scheduled to speak on Monday September 1, so this would be an excellent way to kill the bounce Obama would otherwise get from the President's speech.
