He might be doing well in Kentucky in areas that are not Appalachian.  Also, with the aggressiveness of Obama's media buys (Omaha, Alaska, Georgia), I'm pretty sure if he was in striking distance in his internal WV polling he'd be up on the air there.  WV, being downscale, is probably pretty cheaper to run ads in too.

The last Rassy poll had him down 7 in WV. It was a long time ago, though. He could conceivably be within 5.

Why not? It was close in 2000.

West Virginia isn't nearly as anti-Obama as some of you think.

It's also a solid Democratic state on the state level.

Ok well 2000 was 2000. That's quite some time ago. The Democrats are also at the very least perceived to be too liberal nationally for WV. It's different on the state level.
