It's not quite the days of Big Business using the Pinkerton Detective Agency to divide and destroy labor unions, but the long-dormant battle between Big Business and Big Labor has been reignited over effort to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, which would loosen unions organizing rules.

If the EFCA is passed, unions may once again become a relevant force in the private sector.

The Chamber of Commerce and other pro-business groups are centering on Senate races as last firewall against this legislation. The possible selection of Evan Bayh as Obama's running mate will further impede unions hopes of reaching 60 seats. Only one Republican Senator supports the EFCA. If the Democrats somehow win 59 seats (Sanders and Lieberman support the EFCA), Specter may be forced to cast the deciding vote.

Here's to hoping this fails miserably. At least Florida is a right to work state.

Remember my long list of why Florida sucks? Here's an addition to that.

You have the right to form a union.
Anything you say can and will be used against you in the workplace.
You have the right to have everyone present while deciding.
If you do not make the right choice, one will be made for you.

As a personal supporter of right to work laws, this law would do such "wonders" for small businesses, that I can't wait to think how quickly the voter referendums will be started.  There would be other nice effects for consumers too.

Of course, in NY/NJ, nothing will ever change.  Just gives the mafia more power.

Remember to support your local, state, and federal Chambers of Commerce!

Once again, forced organized labor is not going to work.  It's counter-productive to force workers into these kinds of things.  They aren't joining anymore because they don't benefit from joining!  Unions are outdated and practically useless.  Workers' rights should be more individualized and voluntary.
NO UR WRONG UNIONS ARE TEH WORKING MANS VOICE EVEN WHEN THEY DONT SUPPORT THE CAUSES THERE MONEY GOES FOR.

I must say however that Wal Mart's actions here seem just as inappropriate as some of the union shenanigans that the (sane) people on this thread oppose.

I find that this bill is much too communistic for my tastes. I mean, I would rather die than join a union.

Strange.

Now a dislike of unions I can understand (even if I don't share it), but that just seems a little silly.

That was meant to be hyperbole. Tongue
