It didn't take long for McCain to drop the idea of a civil campaign like he promised.

I respected McCain in 2000. Now I just hate the man. He has become everything he himself hated back when he ran against George W.

I think he might just beat Bush for a lying negative campaign. I was a little wobbly on Obama before, but McCain's attacks have brought me home. McCain would be worse than Bush.

What is the most funny thing is that you feel like you are reading a liberal opinion...not a New York Times news story.

Questioning whether Obama wants to win the election or the war is not the low road, considering Obama has made it quite clear the election comes first.

McCain has definitely run a grumpy, dishonest, negative campaign thus far. Of course, I wasn't expecting anything else.

This is the kind of thing which should be causing McCain's net favorability to erode and his support to fall. He's conducting himself unworthy of the office he seeks

There's Obama, conducting himself with civility and dignity, as he has done throughout Smiley, yet he's no more well thought of Sad

Mccain will not win this election by smearing Obama. If he actually followed his 2000 self and kicked out the advisors of the evil one, I think he would have a good chance of winning.

It's because many already have their opinions made of him. I asked my Kerry voter sister once if she would "vote for Obama" and she laughed and said, "Hell no...Terrorist!" My grandparents are fully convinced that he is indeed a muslim, and 20-30% of Americans agree with them or are unsure. Also, he is black and that hurts him among "White Working Class" voters.

Of my family that I know is voting...atleast 5-8 of my uncles, grandparents, cousins, ect who all voted for John Kerry will either not vote and stay home or cringe and vote McCain. One of those family members is in New Jersey...not Ohio.

Even though it seems insignificant...I can add just eight Kerry votes to either the "stay home" or "John McCain" category. Every family like that will make a difference.

Yeah.. and my late Grandmother was a loyal Republican her whole life until she voted for Al Gore in 2000 because she didn't like Bush.  It was an anecdote.. and she was an exception.  That's all.

My great-grandfather was an old time Republican...ended up voting for Dewey in 1948. I for one, know that I would have voted for Truman in 1948 myself...infact...that may be the last time I would have ever voted Democratic.

Republicans should take heart.  At least these folks they're bringing in know how to win elections.

And is it just me, or do liberals think that every political attack ("Obama is too far left") is a smear?  Both campaigns have been pretty civil.  I wonder how these people would've reacted to campaigns in the early 19th century, which were far less civil than any campaigns around
today.

This is the kind of thing which should be causing McCain's net favorability to erode and his support to fall. He's conducting himself unworthy of the office he seeks

Yes, painting Bill Clinton as a racist was remarkably dignified.

More projecting here.  Perhaps you see McCain's campaign this way because you yourself are grumpy, dishonest, and negative.

This shouldn't be too surprising.  Let me give you an example.  Didn't you mention one time that you had relatives in Georgia who wave the Confederate flag proudly, and always vote straight Democrat - because Republicans were the 'party of Lincoln'?

Who do you think they will be voting for this November?
