Its also been said Obama might be able to court 40% of the Evangelical vote...or something along those lines. Thoughts?

Sure, if 40% of the evangelical turnout is black.

From 21% to 40% among evangelicals?  Ha.

I hate to say this, but he's going to have to address how one can be an evangelical and pro-choice. Personally, my view is that the Bible does not address the issue clearly, and given all the things that it does address clearly, you think it would be if it had the importance prescribed to it by American evangelical culture. Still, it's not an easy debate. So he's probably going to try and avoid that problem altogether, unfortunately.

It's a good idea if it works. The Democrats have done a terrible job courting the evangelical vote over the last 2 elections. Given the relatively weak opponent that Obama is facing, it seems like a  good idea to attempt to court some of these voters and get them on the Democratic side.

40% is not needed but if democrats can get close to 25-27% of the evangelical vote combined with low turnout, they will be in good shape.

He's reaching out and that will be important. I think he will do markedly better with evangelicals than John Kerry did.

Democrats would get more evangelicals if they dropped gun control and went states rights/federalist on social issues.

I don't think gun control is a top issue for most evangelicals. Many of them are actually pro-gun control.

heck, if Obama can get 30% of the white evangelical vote, and not do worse than Kerry in the catholic vote he'll win.

Glad to see he's reaching out to religious voters without becoming a DINO on social issues, like every single Southern Democrat.

Um, when is the last time you saw a national Democrat push major gun control legislation? Talk about a dead issue! It's completely irrelevant at this point in history, no politician even brings it up anymore.
