Alaska is called in the early morning for Barack Obama.

To put Obama over the top 272-266, when all the pundits are declaring it a 269-269 EV tie.

I agree with whoever said the biggest shocker would be Jim Gilmore declared the victor

Alaska is called in the early morning for Barack Obama.

I think this is more realistic than some of the other suggestions floated on this thread.

Although, assuming a close election, McCain probably has a much better chance of winning Washington than Obama Alaska.

Not sure how the looming Summer debate over record gas prices will play in Alaska like everywhere else...

The shocker was that Brown didn't call a snap election at all, of course.

Obama wins one of the random Western states that have been Republican for quite some time (Alaska, Montana, a Dakota, etc.)

They feel the pain there, too. The highest prices in the country, actually ($4.382 today). So the strength of the oil industry is probably not going to make a big difference in the debate.

I saw that as well and it looks like in general Alaskan gas prices are $0.30-$0.60 more than the mainland on average. I'm assuming this has something to do with having to ship most of the crude to refineries in Canada or Washington state...

That's a double edged sword: the recent run up in gas prices has sent the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend through the roof.  It was a mere $845.76 in 2005; it nearly doubled to $1,654.00 in 2007.

McCain takes Delaware and Connecticut
Obama takes Montana, Alaska and South Carolina (the win in Virginia pales next to these wins)
Obama wins all the swing states, unless you count Missouri or Florida, which both go for McCain. NH is solid Obama. Mass is much closer than a bunch of states.
Ohio and Pennsylvania both go solidly to Obama, with Pennsylvania closer than Ohio which Obama takes by 8 points.  Michigan is a double digit Obama win.  McCain takes Indiana, but it's surprisingly close.  NC also goes to McCain in a fairly close 4 point win.

49 states flip, but Texas still delivers the White House to McCain or vice versa.

New England goes McCain just to do the opposite of the Southeast, where everyone black votes and everyone white goes out drinking the night before and forgets the election.  This includes everyone in the Southeast who posts here.  Oops.

-McCain wins New Jersey
-Obama wins a random seemingly-solid-GOP state in the west (Alaska, Montana, whatever...)
